Writing is an expression of one's feelings and understanding of the world around them.  One does not need to write the "Great American Novel" to be a writer.  One simply writes.  Start with your own experiences and add how you felt, what you learned or didn't learn.  Keep going from there even if no one else reads it, you have written it.
